Armor
Armor is divided into three categories of proficiency; light, medium ,and heavy. Shields also require their own proficiency to use properly.
Light
Light armor allows a character to apply his full Dexterity bonus to his Armor Class. It has no armor check penalty and it does not reduce the character's movement.
Medium
Medium armor allows a character to apply his Dexterity bonus up to a maximum of +2 to his Armor Class. It has an armor check penalty of -4. It reduces the character's movement by 10.
Heavy
Heavy armor does not allow a character to apply his Dexterity bonus to Armor Class. It has an armor check penalty of -6 and it reduces the character's movement by 10. Furthermore, a character running in heavy armor only runs at 3x normal speed rather than the usual 4x.
Shields
Shields have no bearing on Dexterity bonus to Armor Class, armor check penalty, or character movement. They only provide an Armor Class bonus if you are proficient in using them.

Specialty Armors
Mithral
Mithral is a rare, ultra-light metal found in various places in the known realms. Many of the finest crafters of mithral are elven, and as such, mithral armor is often referred to as "Elven" armor.
Mithral is most often crafted into chain or plate armor. Mithral armor provides the same AC as it's normal counterpart, but counts as being one category lighter for all purposes. All mithral armor is also considered masterwork, and may be enchanted.
Mithral Chainmail: 4,000 gp.
Mithral Plate Mail: 10,000 gp
