1. The Basics

Ability Scores
Characters are made with a 40 point buy by the standard 3.5 calculator. No more than 3 ability scores may be 16 or higher. Only one of them may be 17 or higher. (Before racial adjusters)  The DM may set a higher or lower point buy, but it's generally not recommended for this high action game.

Characters in Hydra are generally created without rolling dice to eliminate the possibility of imbalances due to one player rolling much higher than another.  If you prefer rolling for characters, the 4d6, 6 times, drop lowest, and re-roll ones method generally comes about closest to a 40 point buy.


Melee Attacks
You may apply either your Strength or Dexterity modifier to melee attack rolls. (whichever is higher, Weapon Finesse is not required)  This applies to all melee weapons.




Starting Cash
All 1st level characters begin with 250gp. Higher level characters begin with the standard gold/level as listed in the DMG.  A character may not spend more than half of his starting cash on any one item.  A character must spend at least half of his starting cash or any excess is lost.
